Welcome to The River’s Edge
Greetings in the name of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ!
Today we near the end of our journey through the epistle of James.
All throughout, James has been testing us for true saving faith to see if it will stand on judgment day. Last week in v. 12 he tested us for integrity. Now comes another test: prayer.
When we experience suffering, we can act like atheists and forget to pray. When we feel cheerful and things are going well, we can act like atheists and forget to praise and thank God. In both cases our sinful disposition is prone to forget God.
If we find we are sick, James teaches us that our first order of business is to go to the elders of the church for prayer. Sometimes our sickness is due to sin in our lives. The good news is that we have a means of grace by which we can be cleansed and that is through confession (1 John 1:9). We have immediate access to the Father! As the old hymn reminds us:
“Oh what peace we often forfeit, Oh what needless pain we bear
all because we do not carry everything to God in prayer.”
