Not Peace, but Division

49 a“Icametocastfireontheearth, andwould thatitwerealreadykindled! 50 bIhaveabaptismtobebaptizedwith, andhowcgreatismydistressuntilitisaccomplished! 51 dDoyouthinkthatIhavecometogivepeaceonearth? eNo, Itellyou, but ratherdivision. 52 Forfromnowoninonehousetherewillbefivedivided, threeagainsttwoandtwoagainstthree. 53 Theywillbedivided, ffatheragainstsonandsonagainstfather, motheragainstdaughteranddaughteragainstmother, mother-in-lawagainstherdaughter-in-lawanddaughter-in-lawagainstmother-in-law.”

54 He also said to the crowds, g“Whenyouseehacloudrisinginthewest, yousayatonce, ‘Ashoweriscoming.’ Andsoithappens. 55 Andgwhenyouseethesouthwindblowing, yousay, ‘Therewillbeiscorchingheat,’ andithappens. 56 Youhypocrites! jYouknowhowtointerprettheappearanceofearthandsky, butwhydoyounotknowhowtointerpretthepresenttime?

57 “Andwhykdoyounotjudgelforyourselveswhatisright? 58 mAsyougowithyouraccuserbeforethemagistrate, makeanefforttosettlewithhimontheway, lesthedragyoutothejudge, andthejudgehandyouovertotheofficer, andtheofficerputyouinprison. 59 Itellyou, nyouwillnevergetoutuntilyouhavepaidtheverylastopenny.”10
